Understanding Your Procedure

We believe informed patients make confident decisions. Explore our most requested procedures to better understand what each treatment involves, what to expect during recovery and the factors to consider before surgery.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

An abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while repairing separated abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis) where appropriate. It is commonly performed following pregnancy or significant weight loss to restore a firmer, more contoured abdominal profile.

Duration Approximately between 1.5 to 3.5 hours
Anaesthetic General Anaesthetic
Hospital Stay 1-night stay
Recovery 2–6 weeks*
Compression Garment Worn for approx 6 weeks

*Recovery times vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts while improving their shape and position. The procedure can relieve physical discomfort associated with overly large breasts, including neck, shoulder, and back pain, while creating a more balanced breast contour.

Duration Approximately 1.5 hours
Anaesthetic General anaesthetic
Hospital Stay Day case
Recovery Approximately 2–6 weeks
Support Bra Worn for approx 6 weeks

Recovery times vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes stubborn, localised fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. It is designed to improve body shape and definition rather than serve as a weight-loss procedure. Liposuction can be performed on a variety of areas, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, hips, back, arms and neck.

Duration Approximately 1–4 hours
Anaesthetic General / Local with Sedation
Hospital Stay Day procedure
Recovery Approximately 2–6 weeks
Compression Garment Worn for approx 6 weeks

Procedure duration and recovery time vary depending on the number of areas treated and the extent of surgery.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances the size, shape and overall proportions of the breasts using implants. The procedure is tailored to each patient, with careful consideration given to your anatomy, lifestyle, and desired outcome to achieve balanced, natural-looking results. Breast augmentation is performed using high-quality silicone breast implants selected to suit your anatomy and desired outcome.

Duration Approximately 1 hour
Anaesthetic General anaesthetic
Hospital Stay Day procedure
Recovery Approximately 2–6 weeks*
Support Bra Worn for approx 6 weeks

*Recovery times vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure.

Upper & Lower Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin and, where appropriate, repositioning or removing excess fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure can improve a tired or heavy appearance, reduce puffiness and, in some patients, improve the upper field of vision affected by excess eyelid skin.

Upper blepharoplasty is performed in our consulting rooms under local anaesthetic. Lower blepharoplasty, or combined upper and lower blepharoplasty, is performed in theatre under local anaesthetic with sedation.

Parameter Upper Blepharoplasty Lower / Combined Blepharoplasty
Duration Approximately 1 hour Approximately 1.5 hours
Anaesthetic Local anaesthetic Local anaesthetic with sedation
Location Consulting Rooms Theatre
Hospital Stay Home the same day Day procedure
Recovery Approximately 1–2 weeks* Approximately 2–3 weeks*

*Recovery times vary depending on the individual and the extent of the procedure.

SMAS Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

A SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) facelift is an advanced facelift technique that rejuvenates the face by lifting and repositioning the deeper supporting tissues, rather than simply tightening the skin. By addressing the underlying facial structures, a SMAS facelift restores youthful contours to the cheeks, jawline and neck while maintaining natural facial expression and avoiding an overly tightened appearance.

The procedure is performed in theatre under local anaesthetic with sedation, allowing patients to remain comfortable throughout the procedure while avoiding a general anaesthetic.

Duration Approximately 3–4 hours
Anaesthetic Local anaesthetic with sedation
Location Theatre
Hospital Stay Day procedure
Recovery Approximately 2–6 weeks*

*Recovery times vary depending on the individual.

Skin Cancer & Reconstructive Surgery

Treatment is tailored to the type, size, and location of your skin lesion, as well as the reconstruction required following its removal.

Many skin lesions can be removed safely in our consulting rooms under local anaesthetic. However, larger, more complex, or high-risk skin cancers may require treatment in theatre. Depending on the diagnosis, your procedure may include reconstruction using direct closure, a local flap, or a skin graft to achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic outcome.

Most patients return home on the same day as their procedure and are reviewed approximately seven days later for wound assessment and, where appropriate, suture removal.

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
  • Melanoma
  • Suspicious Skin Lesions

Treatment Options

Reconstruction is carefully tailored to each patient and may be performed using implants, your own tissue, or a combination of techniques, depending on your individual circumstances and treatment plan.

Dr. Susan F. Johnson works closely with breast surgeons and oncologists to provide personalised reconstructive care aimed at restoring both form and confidence following breast cancer treatment or other conditions requiring breast reconstruction.

Duration Varies depending on the procedure
Anaesthetic General anaesthetic
Hospital Stay Day procedure
Recovery Approximately 2–6 weeks*

*Procedure and recovery times vary depending on the type of reconstruction performed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Consultations

Your consultation is an opportunity to discuss your concerns, medical history, and treatment goals with Dr. Susan F. Johnson. Following a comprehensive assessment, she will explain your treatment options, answer your questions, and recommend a personalised treatment plan based on your individual needs.

A referral is not required for most cosmetic procedures. However, some reconstructive procedures or medical aid-funded treatments may require a referral from your general practitioner or specialist. Our team will advise you if this applies to your consultation.

Consultation times vary depending on the complexity of your concerns but generally last between 30 and 60 minutes. This allows sufficient time for examination, discussion, and treatment planning.

Surgery & Recovery

You will receive pre-operative instructions specific to your procedure. In general, patients may be advised to stop smoking, avoid certain medications and supplements, arrange transport home, and follow fasting instructions where applicable.

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed and individual healing. During your consultation, Dr. Susan F. Johnson will discuss what you can expect and provide personalised guidance regarding your recovery timeline.

This depends on the procedure and the nature of your occupation. Some patients return to desk-based work within a few days, while more extensive procedures may require two to six weeks of recovery.

Gentle walking is encouraged soon after most procedures. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and high-impact activities should only be resumed once approved by Dr. Susan F. Johnson during your follow-up appointments.

All surgical procedures result in some degree of scarring. Dr. Susan F. Johnson carefully plans every incision to achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic outcome. Scars typically soften and mature over time, and you will receive guidance on scar management during your recovery.

Fees & Medical Aid

Medical aid benefits vary depending on your individual scheme and level of cover. Certain reconstructive and medically indicated procedures may qualify for benefits, while cosmetic procedures are generally not covered.

Pre-authorisation is approval obtained from your medical aid before certain procedures are performed. Where applicable, our team will assist with the pre-authorisation process and any required documentation.

Yes. Following your consultation, you will receive a detailed quotation outlining the anticipated costs of your procedure. Our team will also explain any potential co-payments or excess balances based on the information provided by your medical scheme.

A co-payment or excess balance is the portion of the treatment cost that may not be covered by your medical aid. This varies between medical schemes and benefit options. Our team will discuss any anticipated out-of-pocket costs with you before your procedure.

General
